Liberal Democrats call for talks on street violence in Tower Hamlets

4.58.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 28th Jul 2009

Councillor Stephanie Eaton, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Tower Hamlets Council has today called for urgent talks between the police and community leaders about recent upsurge in violent attacks on the streets of Tower Hamlets.

Cllr Eaton, who is also a criminologist said "I am aware of several awful attacks on the streets that have occurred recently. This violent crime seems to be more vicious and brutal, and the victims are left severely injured. This might be about an increase in drug use or a sign of the desperation of some people. We must find out what is causing this increase in serious violence so that we can stop it."

Cllr Eaton has written to the Lead member for Cleaner, Safer, Greener Cllr Abdul Ullah asking for a meeting with members from all political parties and the police to discuss the increase in violent crime in the Borough.
